While hundreds of purely magical species exist across Calsin, only a small handful hold the distinction of being truly sentient. Fairies toe the line between sentient being and simple magical creature, much like genies. They rarely engage in conversation and rarely seem to show a significant amount of free will, leading credence to the idea that they aren't actually sentient at all. Nevertheless, their ability to show emotion upon being captured has led the vast majority of experts to agree that they should be considered fully sentient beings. Ultimately, the infamous Slave/Stock council decided that they should be treated as fully sentient, though leniency was granted in the event of a fairy's death.
Similarly to other fully magical beings, fairies are never seen when they're born into the world. Since all fairies are nearly identical (and thus impossible to tell apart), even close observation of known fairy "spawning" grounds hasn't yielded any success. One moment, there won't be a fairy there, the next, there will be. This has led some to speculate that fairies simply wipe the memory of anyone who sees their birth, but this has never been proven. Fairies in the wild will almost never interact with anyone who enters their sacred groves. Sometimes, though, a fairy forge a bond with an individual, at which point, they allow that individual to ask them to grant wishes. Once the questions is asked, the fairies can't resist. Fairies, unlike most other magical species, can't tap into the latent magical field that covers the continent, and instead use an internal well of magic that they can draw on. When they grant wishes or cast spells, they use up some of that magic. And thus, if the wish that someone asks for is too great, the fairies can expend the last of their energy and wind up dying. This will usually cause all other fairies in the area to become hostile and kill the offender. Curiously enough, once the fairies have been taken from their grove, they become subservient and will typically obey any order given to them. Given their difficulty to catch, this makes them extraordinarily valuable, especially since their healing spells are particularly powerful.
Height: - 3-4 inches
Unusual Characteristics: - Every single fairy is nearly identical, with the appearance of a high elven female. - A set of wings, sprouting from their back, that resemble dragonfly wings.
Coloring: - Golden
Lifespan: - Indeterminate.
Magic: - Drawing on their internal well of energy, each fairy can perform the same set of spells that humans have access to. They're typically rated as having approximately the same amount of power as a human wizard.
Worshiped gods: - Unknown. They seem to worship a form of a deity, but are often unwilling to speak of it.
Other notes: - For reasons unknown, fairies will only appear naturally in the sacred groves of Elsinor, despite not having any known connection to Persphone. - Harvesting fairies for trade is legal in only a small handful of these groves, and it is only legal after acquiring a license from the Elsinor palace. That said, many traders are undaunted by this fact, leading to a massive community of black-market fairy hunters in Elsinor.
