Born from a fiery death, the fact that the flame elves exist at all is a testament to the lengths that deities will go to intervene for their followers. During the Battle for Nettingo, invading dark angels used a powerful nuclear weapon to destroy the city, killing almost everyone inside. Angels of light carried a handful of survivors away, but the vast majority of the city perished. Even those who escaped soon found themselves dying if they stayed too close, victim of the radiation emitted by the residue of the explosion.
Unknown to the outside world, the persphonar of the primary Sacred Grove had gathered up several hundred people and hid them in the catacombs beneath the city. When the city perished in flame, they remained in hiding, saved by Persphone's merciful hand. Now, permanently altered by the deadly energies of the city, the survivors have formed a proper new species. While other mortals find themselves unable to enter the city for fear of death, the newborn Flame Elves are unable to leave, as their bodies now require energy gleaned from radiation in order to survive.
