One of the few species known not to originate from divine province, sand elves were born from an experiment on the continent of Corinth, deep within the mystical city of Het. The star elves, always intent on pushing the boundaries of magic and science, sculpted a machine designed to focus their magical powers a thousandfold. Once they had accomplished this feat, they decided to attempt to endow a small group of participants with abilities allowing them to survive the harsh environments of the deserts surrounding them. After several failed attempts, the sand elves emerged from the kiln, a fully separate species altogether.
From this point, the sand elves fulfilled the experiment and moved out into the desert. There, a flourishing community sprang up, and soon enough diverged from the star elves entirely. While they tend to retain the same lust for knowledge as the star elves, they often focus it on the natural world instead of developing further technologies.
Height: - 6-7 feet
Unusual Characteristics: - Pointed ears - Skin covered in a layer of minerals, giving them the true appearance of being covered in sand.
Coloring: - A wide variety of skin colors, depending on the minerals absorbed. Anywhere from sandy-white to obsidian-black to shades of red, blue, and beyond. Wealthier sand elves will often consume exotic minerals to cultivate rare and valuable shades.
Lifespan: - 600-900 years
Magic: - Despite the physical changes, sand elves retain the same magical abilities as the star elves: the ability to draw magic from the stars themselves.
Other notes: - In order to form the protective layer of minerals, sand elves must ingest the stones that they wish to absorb. To accomplish this, they have a second stomach that will collect all minerals that wind up in the primary stomach. Because of the tediousness of this process, and the fact that the shell is regularly eroded through exposure to harsh environments, it is recommended that sand elves consume minerals regularly, rather than only eating them in large batches. - If the sand elves stop consuming minerals, their outer shell will often vanish within a week or two, depending on the amount that they continue to exert themselves. In this state they are extremely vulnerable to infection: it is not recommended that they venture outside while not covered. - While covered by the thick layer of minerals, sand elves rarely consider it prudent to wear clothes since everything important is concealed anyway. Married couples will go on mineral fasts when they desire to start a family, with the wife remaining on the fast for the duration of the pregnancy.
